Forget not that the earth delights to feel your bare feet
and the winds long to play with your hair.
~ Khalil Gibran

Slanted windswept rain,
magnificent diamonds,
illuminated by
one defiant sun,
superbly soak,
receptive forests
with stoic mountain peaks,
the silent witness.

There are no contradictions in nature,
there is no sense
of obligation,
there is no affect,
no intent;
only pure and simple,
unapologetic
causality.

Weather has no agenda,
it marches on
with its own inherent logic.

These words, these descriptions
are mine;
my poetry, my interpretation,
juxtaposed on what is;
nature doing what it does.

Where are the dots
I need to connect?
Who is speaking to me?
What is it exactly
that I need to see,
and am not seeing?
To what/whom
must I surrender?

And where will I find
my take away from all this?
What can be gleaned
from this superbly simplistic,
inconsequential event
that I know as rain,
to engender
an empowered existence.

Author notes

While working at Stewart Creek Golf Course today I watched from my cart a most amazing sight unfold. A gentle steady and windblown rain was coming down at about a 45 degree angle through a shining sun. The gentle raindrops were glistening in the sunlight and presented a magical quality to this ordinary moment in nature with a take away of insight for me.

My day began with emotional struggle. There are times where my ability to maintain a healthy perspective on all that unfolds around me proves to be a formidable challenge; not unlike pushing a massive boulder uphill. Michelle’s cancer extracts a heavy toll on her physically and emotionally and vicariously I am along for the ride which at times feels like the life is being sucked out of me.

We remind each other from time to time that the only thing we really have any control over is how we choose to perceive these events; and the operative word here is choose. When we can choose, demonstrate fortitude and endurance in the face of adversity without going into a tailspin we become stronger, more resilient and create for ourselves an empowered existence.

Look deep into nature,
and then you will understand everything better.
